SteelPoint, a manufacturer of heavy-duty trailers, is expanding its facility in Union County, North Carolina. The Company will add a 100,000 square foot production building to meet growing demand and expects to complete the work in late 2024. An investment of up to $35 million is currently anticipated in connection with the project. Approximately 25 jobs paying an average of $25/hour will be created. The company currently employs 89 people.
“This investment reflects our commitment to a philosophy of innovation, customer care, and workforce development,” said Michael Edwards, President/CEO of SteelPoint. “We’re expanding our manufacturing capacity to meet significant growth in demand for our products. We are excited to embark on this next phase of our business journey with our highly-skilled team members and look forward to a bright future in the community which has been very good to us.”
At the September 5, 2023, Board of County Commissioners meeting, Union County awarded a “STEP 4” economic development incentive grant not to exceed $822,500 over a five-year period.
“We are very proud that SteelPoint chose to expand their facility here in Union County,” said Union County Commission Vice-Chair, Melissa Merrell. “The company has provided strong career opportunities since 2010, and I am pleased they will continue to be an employer of choice for our residents. Their decision to grow here proves Union County has one of the best business environments in North Carolina and we are proud to provide our support through the economic development incentive grant.”
Union County’s economic development team has been working with SteelPoint for over a year on this project. Through the EDC’s existing industry program, companies are provided continued support and assistance in many ways, including navigating the government processes, workforce training and financial inducements for continued expansion.
“Union County has consistently worked to foster an environment where businesses can thrive, whether from developing our strong laborforce to retaining a low tax rate, Union County is open for business,” stated Chris Platé, Executive Director of Monroe-Union County Economic Development Commission. “SteelPoint’s decision to expand here is another testament to the pro-business atmosphere that our leadership has created in order to support continued investment and job creation.”
